National Forest Week:
September 21-27, 2008
Theme: Canada's Forests - Biodiversity in a Changing
World
“Kids in the Forest” is
an annual event of guided hikes emphasizing the
natural and cultural history of the Forest and
surrounding areas, set up by the Whycocomagh Eco
Centre and Department of Natural Resources to
celebrate National Forestry week. “Kids in the
Forest” is a fun, healthy, exciting event for kids
to broaden their horizons; and hiking is great way
to help them appreciate all the beauty and adventure
that the natural world offers. Kids love to learn,
and giving the opportunity of hands on experience is
truly remarkable way to learn.
Nestled in the rolling
hills of the Mabou Highlands is the beautiful
uneven-aged Acadian Forests of the Black River
Woodlot, Neal Livingston. The woodlot features a
rich mixture of softwood and hardwood Acadian Forest
species, wildlife and an abundance of brooks and
this year’s site for “Kids in the Forest”. The day
was set up with a variety interactive stations
including: Forestry ecology, Insect life cycles, GEO
mapping, Species at Risk, Fire and prevention, Tree
identification, Geology, and Maple Syrup production.
While the program is
designed for students in grade 6; it was the grade 5
class of the Education Centre that had the
opportunity to partake in this event and to the
surprise and delight of all presenters this group
became known as the most attentive, courteous,
caring, interested and knowledgeable group; a true
credit to our teachers, parents and community!
